Autumn Reflections
Have you ever sat and watched the leaves fall from the tall trees? Do you remember being a small child and walking knee-high through orange and yellow piles of crisp leaves? Can you still hear your own squeals of delight in these images?
On the west side of the Native American Medicine Wheel Autumn is a time of intuition and magic. It is a time of reflection and "going within". Intuition lies within our very being, our core.
Growing up in southern California I was not privy to a four season climate though we had our own sense of the changing seasons. Summers were endless as we played some rendition of baseball in the suburb streets. If there weren't enough kids for two teams we played "hit the bat." Our signal to return home was when the street lights went on. Autumn brought shorter days with cooler weather, back to school, homework and Girl Scout meetings. Winters were never white in our Los Angeles suburb but mom and dad would pack us up at least once a winter to head up to the San Gabriel Mountains where we could play in the snow until we were cold, wet and tired. We would eat lunch and sip hot chocolate with marshmallows from a thermos in the backseat of the family car. Spring brought Easter baskets, hats and new white shoes along with the anticipation of long summer days ahead.
Take time today to just sit and be. Go within and return to your childhood where you once connected with nature on some level. Look out your window now when the leaves still offer you their grand show. Soon the tree branches will be bare and we will welcome the peace and stillness of winter. What tradition would you like to bring back this season? What tradition would you like to create anew?
